SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Massachusetts State Police are investigating a deadly crash that happened on the Mass Pike, Friday afternoon, in West Springfield.
Trooper Carlos Nunez of the Westfield State Police Barracks told 22News the crash happened around 3:40 p.m. Friday at the Exit 4 ramp on the Mass Pike. He said the driver of a 2001 Ford Ranger was heading down the westbound ramp when he drove over the median and hit a Chevrolet Tahoe on the eastbound ramp.
State Police said the driver of the Ford suffered a medical emergency. After the crash, troopers found the Ford on its roof.
Trooper Nunez said the three people in the Chevrolet and the driver of the Ford were all taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. The Ford driver was declared dead at the hospital. The identities of the victims are not being released at this time.
The traffic at the nearby toll plaza was impacted by the crash investigation for about two hours. The crash site was cleared by 5:47 p.m.
The investigation is still ongoing.
