A 17-year-old girl was killed Friday night when she crashed into a tree, causing her car to go up in flames in Franklin, Massachusetts.
The Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office confirms Madeline Lamson of Medway died in the one-car crash.
Officials say Lamson was driving home alone when she crashed near 850 Lincoln St. just after 11:30 p.m. A bystander who tried to help could not pull her from the car because the fire had rapidly spread. Responders were also unable to free her immediately.
Crews put the fire out within five minutes, according to officials, but Lamson was declared dead at the scene.
Principal Timothy McCarron says “Maddy” was one of the most engaging, joyful people he’s ever met in his 27 years in education.
Students showed up at Medway High School Saturday morning to meet with grief counsellors.

“I think a great testament of Maddy was at 10 o’clock this morning, her teammates came here with their parents,” said McCarron. “The respect that was paid to her by the parents and the teammates was incredible, and I think that is just a testament to the type of individual she was.”
“This is a terribly tragic situation, involving the loss of a young life,” Franklin Police Chief Stephan Semerjian said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to the victim’s family during this difficult time.”
The cause of the crash is under investigation. Police have not said if alcohol played a part.
Grief counselors will again be available at the school Sunday.
