Two accidents shut down an entire side of the Massachusetts Turnpike in Ludlow late Friday morning, injuring four people.
State Trooper Nicole Morrell told 22News that the first crash was a two-car accident on the westbound side of the Pike, and that was shortly followed by a two-car crash on the eastbound side. Four people were taken by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center after the crashes.
All westbound lanes were shut down at around 11:00 Friday morning, while the eastbound side of the highway was down to a single lane. All lanes were re-opened after 11:30.
Backups on the westbound side had stretched as far back as Palmer, and eastbound traffic had been up from Exit 6 in Chicopee. While the accident has cleared, it may take a while for those backups to ease.
One of the drivers in the westbound crash, 26 year-old Nicole Linker of Hope, Maine will be summonsed to court on charges including negligent operation, a passing violation, driving with a suspended or revoked registration, and uninsured/unregistered operation of a motor vehicle.
The people injured in the crash are expected to survive.
