A wrecked boat was towed away from Lake Avenue in Worcester, Massachusetts Wednesday morning.
Overnight, police say four people were thrown from the boat when it crashed into a construction barge on Lake Quinsigamond. All of the passengers were taken to the hospital, one of them now suffering serious injuries.
According to police, the boat hit a barge at Middlesex Corporation around 1 a.m. Wednesday. The construction company is building the nearby Burns Bridge replacement project. Police say the boat capsized.
Witness Ed Niziolek says firefighters cut the gate lock and rescued the boaters.
Authorities are looking into the possibility that the barge safety lights were not working when the boat crashed.
Environmental police say Gregory Polito, 50, of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, was driving the boat. He was taken to the hospital along with a 49-year-old Shrewsbury woman, a 26-year-old Northbridge woman, and a 28-year-old Millbury man.
The 28-year-old is in critical condition. Worcester Police say he has serious internal and head injuries.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
