Traumatic Brain & Head Injuries

Traumatic brain injury is sudden physical damage to the brain. This can occur when the head forcefully hits an object.  In other cases, something passing through the skull and piercing the brain, like a gunshot wound, also causes severe head injury. One of the major causes of traumatic brain injury is from motor vehicle accidents. Other common causes include slip & falls, sports related injuries, violent crimes, and child abuse.

When head injuries occur, they usually result in physical, behavioral, or mental changes.  Speech and language are therefore affected, as well as voice, swallowing, walking, balancing, coordination difficulties, changes in the ability to smell and in memory / cognitive skills.  Head & Brain injuries often cause lifelong metal and physical problems.  If you suspect that you or someone you love has suffered a brain injury, you should contact a doctor or go to a hospital immediately.
