ATHOL (WGGB) — A Holyoke man was involved in a two-car crash in Athol late Wednesday night that left another driver dead.
Massachusetts State Police say their Athol Barracks received a call for a multi-car crash on Route 2 at 10:22 p.m.
When they arrived at the scene, troopers found two cars that had crashed in the westbound lanes.
State Police still do not know why a 65 year-old woman from Athol lost control of her 1998 Dodge Stratus in the eastbound lane and crossed over into the opposite side. A 58 year-old Holyoke man was driving his 2001 Volvo in the westbound lane and hit the other car, leaving the woman with serious injuries.
An ambulance rushed the woman to Athol hospital, where she later died. The Holyoke man was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Route 2 eastbound was closed until 2:00 a.m. Thursday, as rescue operations cleared the scene and troopers began to investigate.
Troopers were assisted on scene by Athol Police and Fire Departments and Orange Police.
State Police are expected to provide the names of the drivers involved sometime Thursday, after next-of-kin are notified.
