One Saugus man was killed and another injured yesterday when an alleged drunken driver crashed into their car on Interstate 93, state police said.
The accident occurred shortly before 7 a.m. south of the River Road exit in Andover, police said.
Shayna Fernandez, 21, of Lawrence was driving a 2002 Acura RSX in the northbound, left-hand lane at a high rate of speed when it hit a 1993 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer driven by Francis A. O’Hanley Jr., 62, police said.
The Acura left the roadway, entered the center median and then veered back onto the roadway, hitting the Blazer again, police said. The Blazer rolled over and came to rest in the median, police said.
O’Hanley was rushed to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
His 25-year-old passenger, Timothy O’Hanley, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Joseph A. Coppola 57, of Malden, was also in the Blazer and badly hurt. He was rushed to Lawrence General Hospital and then flown by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital, police said.
Fernandez was uninjured and was arrested at the scene on charges of operating under the influence.
The crash remains under investigation. Additional charges are expected to reflect the death of the driver and the serious injuries to his passenger, police said.
Fernandez is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow in Lawrence District Court.
Parts of I-93 North were shut down for up to three hours after the accident.
Traffic was detoured onto Interstate 495 for about an hour, police said.
