Joseph Wilson, 16, of North Grafton, and Christopher McLellan, 27, of Whitinsville, were both pronounced dead at the scene, according to Sutton police.
The two appear to have been going east in a 2002 Ford Taurus when it went off the road and into a tree at approximately 1:15 a.m. Sgt. Joshua Nunnemacher found the car on its roof at the edge of the road with both occupants inside. Mr. Wilson was the driver.
Speed and alcohol were “major contributing factors in the crash,” according to a press release from Sutton police, and neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt.
Sutton police Officer Matthew K. Bohanan and the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council Accident Reconstruction unit are investigating.
At the scene of the crash yesterday, visitors left several items at the base of a large pine tree, including flowers, stuffed animals, a cross, and a balloon.
Grafton Superintendent Joseph F. Connors said Mr. Wilson attended Grafton schools before enrolling four years ago at Valley Tech in Upton.
Mr. Wilson, who did not have any siblings, had friends who attended Grafton High School, Mr. Connors said. Grafton officials are prepared to offer counseling assistance tomorrow, Mr. Connors said. Officials at Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical could not be reached for comment yesterday.
“This is a sad incident anytime it occurs, and it’s particularly hard at this time of year,” Mr. Connors said.
