When troopers arrived on the scene, the 1999 Mercedes-Benz sedan was engulfed in flames, state police said.
The man who was believed to be driving, identified as a 30-year-old Boston man, and the front-seat passenger, a 29-year-old Boston man, were trapped in the car and were killed, state police said. The passenger in the back seat, a 30-year-old Methuen man, was transported to Boston Medical Center, and later transferred to Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
According to police, a preliminary investigation indicates the car failed to negotiate a curve, went off the road, struck a tree, then ended up back on the road.
The road was closed for several hours, reopening at 5:40 a.m., state police said.
That crash is also under investigation.
