MASSACHUSETTS – A gingerbread house recall has been issued by Whole Foods Market because a risk of food poisoning. The makers of the gingerbread houses, Rolf’s Patisserie, has made other products that has been associated with an outbreak of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) food poisoning. So far there has been no reports of illness associated with the recalled gingerbread houses.
The gingerbread houses were made by Rolf’s Patisserie and sold with either a Whole Foods Market scale label or have also the “Rolf’s Patisserie” in the label description. The gingerbread houses were made after November 1, 2010 and were sold in several states.
There are a total of 23 states involved in the recall. The grocery store chain Whole Foods Market sold the recalled gingerbread houses at their stores in Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Florida, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin.
The gingerbread houses were already assembled and decorated. They had clear plastic wrap packaging protecting it.
Symptoms associated with a Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) food poisoning can make an infected person nauseous, vomit, have stomach cramps, and have diarrhea. The food poisoning usually lasts between one to two days however more sever cases can last around three days. The elderly, the very young, and those with a weakened immune system could become more ill and may need medical treatment for dehydration. If you have the recalled gingerbread house you are advised to either dispose of it or you can return it back to Whole Foods Market for a refund.
