WESTFIELD – An infant was killed Wednesday at the scene of a two-car accident at Dartmouth and Notre Dame streets in the city’s north side, police said.

Police arrived at the scene of the accident at about 5:30 p.m. and found the infant in the road, said police Lt. Paul Kousch.

The child’s mother was at the scene and was taken to Noble Hospital for treatment. Police arranged for a local priest who serves as the department chaplain to go to the hospital to offer comfort to the family, Kousch said.

The department’s accident investigation specialist, officer Michael Gamache, and members of the state police Accident Reconstruction Team were on scene Wednesday night investigating the accident.

Kousch said police were trying to piece together how the accident happened and had little information available for the press. He said it has not yet been determined how the infant died.

Police were not releasing the names of the mother or the child. Kousch would say only they were residents of the city’s north side.
