A man was struck and killed as he saved a 4-year-old girl from an oncoming Dodge pick-up truck Sunday afternoon.
The 38-year-old was trying to cross the road with the girl on Temple Street in an area where there is no sidewalk.
The Whitman fire chief lives close to where the accident occurred and was the first on the scene and said it appears the father tried to pull the 4-year-old out of harm’s way.
“It was quite obvious that he took the direct impact of the vehicle,” he said.
The young girl was also struck by the truck and airlifted to Mass General Hospital where she is in serious, but stable condition.
“I think this guy’s an actual hero because it could have been two people killed from this,” said a witness.
Police said the 46-year-old driver from Attleboro isn’t facing any charges at this time.
“He’s indicating to us that he didn’t see them as they came out and he had no chance to avoid the crash,” said an official.
A memorial has been placed in honor of the victim.
