WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – State Police were busy dealing with a series of accidents on I-91 Thursday morning, including a deadly crash that caused heavy backups for hours on the northbound side in West Springfield.
The deadly crash took place near Exit 14 (the Mass Pike exit). According to Massachusetts State Police Media Relations, after 7:15 A.M., the driver of a Honda Civic lost control of his car, went off the northbound side of the highway into the median, and rolled over.
State police say that the man had died at the accident site. His identity was not being publicly released until his family has was notified. State Police Media Relations identified him Friday as 20 year-old Osman Arshad of West Springfield. State police are still looking into what exactly caused Arshad to lose control of the car.
Both the left and center lanes of the highway were closed early in the accident investigation, but the center lane was re-opened shortly before 9:00 A.M.
The accident led to traffic backups through West Springfield back over the Connecticut River Bridge into Chicopee. By 11:00, traffic was moving freely again through the area.
Other crashes caused major delays on the southbound side from the North End into Chicopee, but those have since cleared.
