HOPKINTON – Two people were injured in a single-car crash Thursday afternoon on the Massachusetts Turnpike.
A 2001 Jeep Cherokee driven by Nicholas Casey, 53, of Marblehead, reportedly rolled over a number of times on the westbound side of the turnpike at about 2:50 p.m., state police said. Emergency responders from Westborough and Southborough were dispatched to assist Casey and his passenger, Kimberly O’Connor, 41, of Geneva, Ill.
Casey was taken to UMass Medical Center in Worcester with incapacitating but non-fatal injuries, state police said. O’Connor was also taken to the hospital for treatment of her injuries.
The cause of the crash is under investigation and it appears both occupants were wearing their seat belts, state police said, but motor vehicle charges are not being ruled out.
Traffic was backed up for close to 5 miles before the site was cleared. It took a little less than an hour to reopen all lanes after cleanup by state Department of Transportation workers.
