Massachusetts man charged after fiery drag-racing crash on Route 195, East Providence

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Two cars were drag racing on Route 195 East Tuesday evening when one lost control and slammed into a light pole, Rhode Island State Police said.

Both the driver a passenger in the car that crashed, a red 2004 Nissan sedan, refused medical treatment at the scene.

The driver, Stephen Conti, 20, of Rehoboth, Mass., was arrested and charged with reckless driving, said Rhode Island State Police Lt. Stephen Flood.

Witnesses told investigators that they saw the red Nissan and another car pull alongside each other in the vicinity of the Washington Bridge before both accelerated quickly, Flood said. The Nissan then lost control in the curve after the bridge near Exit 5 and crashed around 8:30 p.m.

Conti was arraigned at the State Police Lincoln Barracks and released on $1,000 personal recognizance. He is due back in Court Oct. 2, Flood said.

The other vehicle left the scene and police encourage anyone with information about it to contact them.
