RIDGEFIELD PARK, NJ – A Massachusetts man was the victim of a fatal car accident today that closed the New Jersey Turnpike’s approach lanes to Route 80 for several hours.
According to State police spokesman Sgt. Brian Polite, Mario R. Simas, of New Bedford, Mass., 46, was traveling south on the turnpike in the center lane in his 2002 Ford Explorer. When a 2003 Ford Taurus tried to move from the left to the center lane, it clipped Simas’ vehicle, which rolled and struck a concrete barrier. Simas’ car eventually ended up in the northbound lane of Route 80, according to Police.
Simas was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:28 p.m.
Polite said witnesses provided information about the other car, which led to the apprehension of the car’s occupants on Route 95 in Maryland by Maryland state police. The driver, Christopher Parks, 19, and passenger Alejandro Rodriguez, 20, both of Glenn Dale, Md., were arrested, questioned and released, pending further investigation, according to Polite.
