Military veteran killed in Brockton road crash

BROCKTON – A 65-year-old military veteran who had two limbs amputated is dead after his motorized wheelchair was struck by a car while crossing a busy road in Brockton.

U.S. Marine Corps veteran Edwin Nelson was crossing Belmont Street on Monday when a vehicle driven by 26-year-old Frank Dernoga crashed into his wheelchair. He was taken to Good Samaritan Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The Enterprise reports that police are reviewing surveillance video that captured the accident from a nearby business.

There was no immediate word on whether Dernoga, from Taunton, would be charged.

Nelson was living at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center which is located less than a mile away from the crash site.
