BOXBOROUGH – Five ambulances and a medical helicopter were called to the scene of a serious crash on 495 northbound in Boxborough on Tuesday afternoon.
Massachusetts State Police responded to reports of a multi-vehicle accident at the 73.8 mile marker at approximately 3:15 p.m.
When officials arrived on scene, they were forced to shut down portions of the highway for clean up. The far right travel lane and breakdown lane are still closed.
A Ford van being operated by a 41-year-old woman from Monticello, N.Y. was traveling in the far right lane when another vehicle attempted to move into that lane. The cars collided and the van spun out of control and the rolled over.
Police say there were seven people in the van, including two children, ages 5 and 8-years-old. The 8-year-old boy was ejected and ended up under the van.
Witnesses stated that motorists stopped and lifted the van off the child.
Six people were transported to UMass Worcester, including a 41-year-old female from Monticello, N.Y., who was sent to the hospital via MedFlight.
Three others were transported to Emerson Hospital in Concord and one was transported to UMass Leominster.
The crash remains under investigation.
