Nantucket man killed in driveway accident

A 55-year-old island man has died of injuries he suffered when being run over by a vehicle in the driveway of his Field Avenue home Thursday, Nantucket police said Friday.

The police and fire departments responded at 7:33 p.m. Thursday to a report that Delbert Rogers had been run over in the driveway of 14 Field Ave. by a sport-utility vehicle operated by Shauna Asplint, 24, of Nantucket, Lt. Jerry Adams said.

Rogers was transported to Nantucket Cottage Hospital, and flown by MedFlight helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates the man was lying in the driveway at the time of the accident, and was struck as Asplint’s vehicle pulled in, Adams said. There is no evidence of impaired operation of a motor vehicle by Asplint, and no charges have been filed at this time, he said.
