New Bedford bicyclist dies after being struck by FedEx truck

NEW BEDFORD – A female bicyclist has died due to injuries sustained after being struck by a FedEx freight truck Wednesday afternoon in the New Bedford Industrial Park complex.

On Wednesday, about 6 p.m, Dartmouth police responded to the area of Samuel Barnett Boulevard and Flaherty Drive, for a motor vehicle crash involving a bicyclist.

According to Dartmouth police, a FedEx freight truck struck Cynthia Pacheco, 58, of New Bedford, as she and her husband rode their bicycles along Samuel Barnett Boulevard. The operator of the FedEx truck, Mark Sims, 38, advised police that he was making a left turn onto Flaherty Drive, when the accident occurred. Both parties involved are New Bedford residents.

Pacheco was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, and then to Rhode Island Hospital, where she later passed away due to her injuries.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash. Officer Peter Canuel, along with Dartmouth Accident Reconstruction Specialist, Officer Steven Canario and the Massachusetts State Police Truck Team are leading the investigation.
