New Bedford man killed in motorcycle accident

NEW BEDFORD — A city resident was killed Tuesday afternoon on Route 18 in a motorcycle accident, police said.

The motorcycle driver in the fatal crash was identified as Kevin Pires, 25, according to Capt. Thomas Flood.

The single-motorcycle accident occurred about 1:35 p.m. on Route 18 northbound, just north of Walnut Street near downtown, according to Sgt. Mark Stone. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

It appears the motorcycle operator was traveling northbound on Route 18 when he failed to negotiate a curve just north of Walnut Street and hit the curb, according to Detective Capt. Steven Vicente, public information officer of the New Bedford Police Department.

The driver, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle, he said.

The accident investigation is ongoing, police said.
