One person was killed and two more were hospitalized following a single-vehicle crash on the Sumner Tunnel ramp to Interstate 93 northbound early Friday morning.
Investigators with the Massachusetts State Police are now trying to figure out why a 2002 Dodge Ram with three male passengers went out of control at about 3:10 a.m. in the area of the ramp.
Lieutenant Joe Lucchetti of Boston EMS confirmed that one accident victim was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital and a second victim was taken to Tufts Medical Center. At least one patient was reportedly in critical condition.
A third victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene shortly before 3:30 a.m., and reported one victim was walking around when they arrived.
The Sumner Tunnel was closed following the accident, but reopened shortly before 5 a.m., according to a posting on the State Police Twitter account.
The northbound ramp to Interstate 93 was reopened at about 6 a.m.
