One dead, two injured in Topsfield crash

TOPSFIELD, Maine — A young Massachusetts man died Sunday after he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree on Route 1 in a crash that also injured his two passengers, Maine State Police Sgt. Jeff Ingemi said in an email.

Robert Thibeault, 21, of Kingston, Massachusetts, crashed his 2005 Chevy Malibu at about 12:45 p.m. and died at the scene, the sergeant said.

He was driving south on Route 1 and “lost control, causing the vehicle to go off the west side of the road into a tree,” Ingemi said. “There were two passengers both from Massachusetts in the vehicle who were transported to a local hospital for minor injuries. All three occupants were wearing seat belts.

“Speed and driver inattention appear to be a factor in the crash,” the sergeant said.

Trooper Chad Lindsey was the first at the scene and was later assisted by Ingemi, Trooper Josh D’Angelo, Princeton and Danforth Fire Departments and Calais Emergency Medical Services.
