One victim airlifted after I-495 crash, ramp closed for rescue effort

ANDOVER — Three people were injured last night — at least one of them seriously — in a two-car crash on the exit ramp from Interstate 495 South to Interstate 93 North.

A medical helicopter landed on an adjacent area where the two highways meet to transport one of the passengers to Massachusetts General Hospital soon after the 9:30 p.m. crash.

The two other injured passengers were taken to Lawrence General Hospital.

State police reported that one of the passengers was from Lowell and another from New Hampshire. No other details were available on the crash victims or their condition.

The crash involving a Chevrolet Malibu and a Honda Odyssey forced the closure of the exit ramp to I-93 North. A Mass Highway crew set up a message board sign warning drivers of a detour.

A state police accident reconstruction team was called in to investigate the crash.

Firefighters used hydraulic jacks to free the injured passengers from the wreckage.
