An 88-year-old woman suffered life threatening injuries after she was hit by a car at a main intersection in downtown Peabody around 5:30 p.m. tonight, according to Peabody police.
The victim, who was not identified, was first taken to North Shore Medical Center in Salem and then flown by helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was suffering “massive trauma,” according to Peabody Police Sergeant Timothy Maroney.
“She’s got some head injuries,” he said.
The driver of the car, identified by police as Yang Lo of Medford, was not injured. The woman was struck near the intersections of Main and Foster streets, police said.
Maroney said that he didn’t believe that either speed or alcohol were involved.
“It’s still under investigation,” he said. “I don’t believe those were factors.”
State Police crash reconstruction team is assisting Peabody police with the investigation.
No charges have been filed against Lo pending the results of the investigation, Maroney said.
