Police: Cape teen texting before crash

Harwich police say alcohol and texting behind the wheel are to blame for a weekend crash that injured a teen driver.

Police say 18-year-old Amanda Abbey’s cellphone was found inside the wreckage of her car and the text message window was open and showed a back-and-forth conversation up to the time of the Saturday night crash when her vehicle crossed a center line and struck a utility pole.

Her vehicle landed on its roof and she was able to get out on her own. She did require hospitalization for injuries not considered life threatening.

Police tell the Cape Cod Times (http://bit.ly/w6hFAP) Abbey is charged with operating under the influence, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and operating to endanger under the new state law prohibiting texting and driving.
