WEST SPRINGFIELD – State police say a 15-year-old boy has been killed after being partially ejected from an SUV that overturned at least three times on the Massachusetts Turnpike in West Springfield.
The Thursday morning crash near Mile Marker 43 shut down the eastbound right travel lane for more than four hours.
Police did not identify the boy, who they said wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. The driver, 17-year-old Amanda Jean Lariviere of East Otis, and three other 17-year-old girls from Great Barrington and Monterey suffered minor injuries.
Investigators said Lariviere was in the far right lane preparing to pass another car when she saw a truck in the left lane and lost control when she tried to avoid it. The SUV rolled at least three times before coming to rest on its roof in the breakdown lane.
