An elderly Scituate man was killed Tuesday morning after the motorcycle he was operating collided with a tractor-trailer on Route 3A near the Scituate reservoir.
Richard Young, 74, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a statement from the office of Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz.
“It was a tragic accident,” Scituate Fire Chief John Murphy said. “A tragedy for everyone involved—the person who died, the driver of the truck, and the first responders. It was a horrific scene.”
A preliminary investigation indicated that Young was traveling northbound on his Harley Davidson motorcycle around 11 a.m. Young crossed into the southbound lane, veering directly into the front of a truck from the Boston-based Costas Provision Corporation.
The driver of the truck and a fellow passenger were uninjured.
Route 3A between the rotary and First Parish Road was closed to traffic for several hours while authorities investigated and cleaned up the scene.
The Scituate Police Department, members from the Massachusetts State Police Truck Team, the Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, and troopers from the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office were still investigating the incident as of press time, Scituate Police Chief Michael Stewart said.
