SOMERVILLE – A 19-year-old Woburn man was killed early Saturday after losing control of his car on Interstate 93 and falling 30 to 40 feet onto Route 28 in Somerville, State Police said in a statement.
Christopher J. Ward was driving a 1997 Ford Taurus southbound when his vehicle veered off the roadway, crossed over the guardrail, and dropped.
State troopers arrived at the scene about 12:50 a.m. and found Ward inside the car. He was pronounced dead at Massachusetts General Hospital, police said.
Investigators determined that a 1995 Nissan pickup truck hit Ward’s sedan on Route 28, either as it hit the ground or immediately after.
Lawrence J. Capriotti Jr., 31, of Somerville, the pickup driver, had fled the scene but returned driving another car about an hour later, police said. He is being charged with leaving the scene of a crash causing personal injury and leaving the scene of a crash causing property damage, according to police.
Capriotti was not charged with causing Ward’s crash, which is under investigation.
Southbound ramps from Route 28 to I-93 southbound were closed for about two and a half hours.
