Saturday at 8:57 p.m. troopers assigned to the Massachusetts State Police Barracks in Foxboro responded to a one-vehicle crash on Route 495 southbound, near Exit 14, in Plainville. The operator died as a result of her injuries and the passenger sustained minor injuries.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Nicolas Canavan indicates that a 1996 Toyota Avalon was traveling south on Route 495 when its operator lost control of her vehicle, veering into the median strip and striking a tree.
The driver, Laura Vannett, 18, of Middleboro was not wearing a seatbelt. She suffered serious injuries and was transported by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where she was pronounced deceased.
The passenger, who was wearing a seatbelt, Veronica Valenti, 21, from Middleboro was transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro with minor injuries.
The investigation into the facts and circumstances surrounding the crash is being conducted by Troop H of the Massachusetts State Police, with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section.
State Police were also assisted at the scene by the Wrentham and Plainville Fire and Rescue Department and the Highway Division of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
The southbound side of Route 495 was closed for approximately 60 minutes to accommodate the emergency response and investigation.
