Texting driver seriously injured in two-vehicle crash in Hyannis Wednesday

HYANNIS – According to Barnstable Police at the scene, a texting driver, identified as William Hellwig, 21, of Marstons Mills, was seriously injured after his car collided with a large pickup truck at the intersection of Yarmouth Road and Ferndoc Street in Hyannis, Wednesday, December 1, 2010 around 4:45 p.m.

Rescuers requested a MedFlight helicopter for Hellwig, but it was denied due to weather.

The impact of the accident caused the pickup truck to crash into a furniture warehouse building causing damage to a large section of wall.

It is unknown at this time if the driver of the pickup truck was injured.

A section of the roadway was shut down for over an hour as police cleared the scene.

A texting while driving ban began in Massachusetts on September 30 of this year.
