Three hurt in serious crash in New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) – Three people were hurt after a car crashed into a utility pole Thursday night in New Bedford.

The crash happened on the ramp from Route 18 to Route 140 at about 8:20 p.m., according to Massachusetts State Police. Two of the three occupants had to be extricated from the 2002 Nissan Sentra and were flown by helicopter to area hospitals.

The driver, a 33-year-old New Bedford man, was flown to Rhode Island Hospital, while one of the passengers, a 31-year-old New Bedford man, was taken to Beth Israel Hospital. The third person in the vehicle was taken via ambulance to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford.

State Police had no further information on their conditions and their names were not immediately released.

Police were on the scene until about 10:50 p.m, troopers said, and the state police accident reconstruction unit is investigating. They have not yet determined the cause of the wreck.
