Truck hits snowbank, flies off Boston elevated highway in drunken crash, cops say

A terrifying video shows the moment a pickup truck launched off a Boston highway in Dukes of Hazzard fashion.

An East Boston man is lucky to be alive after state police said he drunkenly drove off an elevated highway Sunday morning, crashing head-on into the roadway below.

Vannak Sao was taken to an area hospital after the 33-year-old, driving a Toyota Tacoma owned by a relative, hit the snow-covered barrier on the I-93 off-ramp at Route 1, became airborne and rammed a highway sign and light pole before plummeting down, Boston.com reported.

“I know the truck is totaled, but I’m glad he’s still alive,” Vanny Sao, the driver’s father, told CBS Boston. “He said he probably fall asleep or something and hit the snowbank or slip and slide. I’m not sure yet.”

The 6:21 a.m. incident was caught on video by a traffic camera.

Firefighters were called to extricate Sao.

Police charged Sao with operating under the influence of alcohol and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
