SPRINGFIELD (WGGB) — Two Springfield Police officers were injured early Tuesday, when their cruiser crashed into a large van on an on-ramp in Springfield.
More than a dozen Springfield and State Police cruisers are on the scene of the crash that shut down an on-ramp to I-91 South and Route 5 in Springfield. That on-ramp has since reopened.
Springfield Police say their officers were hoping to detain a driver who claimed to be suicidal, when that driver crashed his van into a guardrail. The officers’ cruiser then ran into the back of that van.
The driver and two police officers are being treated for their injuries. None of them are considered to be serious.
The call about that driver was initially put out by police in Suffield, Connecticut, who were hoping that one of the Western Mass departments could detain him.
Springfield Police say that man is being treated, but emphasized that he is not a suspect.
