Two pedestrians hit on Route 9

A man and woman were hit by a car going westbound on Route 9 in Northborough while crossing the street on Route 9.

According to police, the crash was the result of an accident [sic] that spilled out from Motel 6 onto Route 9 across from the Celtic Tavern. Both victims, who sustained injuries, are from Providence, RI.

Witnesses say the argument started in the parking lot of Motel 6. The woman walked across the divided, two-lane highway, sitting on the Jersey barrier when the male came out to talk with her.

“Apparently, the man convinced her to go back,” said Chief Mark Leahy, “and when she started to come back she was hit in the middle of the lanes by an oncoming car.”

The male was also hit and landed against the barrier.

“The person who hit them couldn’t see anything,” said Leahy, noting that both victims were black, and wore dark clothing.

When police arrived, the woman lay in the middle of the street on the dotted divider line, and the man was against the barrier.

The driver was “shaken” but not injured, said Leahy.

Names of the victims have not been released and are both in stable condition at UMass Hospital.

It is unclear what the nature of their injuries are, or if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Team processed the scene. Route 9 was blocked going westbound from Otis Street until the crash was cleared.
