WESTPORT — Two women are dead and a 3-year-old child is hospitalized as a result of a two-vehicle crash Thursday night on Route 88 in Westport.
The accident, which was reported at 7:30 p.m., occurred when a Fall River woman driving north on the southbound side of Route 88 crashed head on into a pickup truck in the area of American Legion Highway, police said.
Susan Stallman, 51, of Fall River, was killed instantly, police said.
Janet McNulty, 49, of Westport, was pronounced dead at the scene after being ejected from her Toyota pickup truck, which rolled over.
Neither woman was wearing a seat belt, police said.
“It was one of the most serious crashes we’ve seen,” said Westport police Detective Jeff Majewski. “It was a catastrophic impact.”
Stallman’s granddaughter, who was in a back seat of Stallman’s Hyundai sport utility vehicle, suffered a serious leg injury, said Majewski. He said the child is expected to recover. The young girl was transported by ambulance to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Rhode Island.
Police are investigating how Stallman came to be driving north on southbound Route 88. Concrete barriers separate the highway in that location, said Majewski, adding that Stallman was familiar with the area.
“The Westport police offer our condolences to the family members of all who were involved in the crash,” Majewski said.
Police detoured traffic for three hours while investigators worked the accident between Briggs Road and Route 177. The Massachusetts State Police Reconstruction Unit and state police troopers assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office assisted with the investigation.
