Vigil held for pedestrian killed on I-195

SEEKONK – An 18 year-old Seekonk man is dead after being struck by a hit-and-run driver on Route 195 westbound Friday night.

The Massachusetts State Police say Jacob Mayo was walking in the breakdown lane of the highway near Exit 1 at about 1130pm when he was struck by a red Hyundai Accent which fled the scene.  Mayo was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

At this point police are still investigating the circumstances preceding the crash, including why Mayo was walking on the highway.

The Hyundai – believed to be a model year between 2000 and 2005 – has front-end damage believed to include a torn-off corner of the right front bumper, windshield damage, and a missing side mirror.  Police are requesting that anyone with information on the whereabouts of the car to contact the Dartmouth Barracks of the Mass State Police at (508) 993-8373.

UPDATE:

State Police have confirmed to ABC6 News that they have located the car believed to be involved in the accident. The car is a Hyundai Accent.

No other details are being released at this time.
