Weymouth man involved in Stoneham car crash

STONEHAM – A Melrose woman suffered life-threatening injuries Saturday morning when a Weymouth man reportedly failed to stop for a red light and struck her vehicle in Stoneham, Massachusetts state police said.

Troopers responded to Rte. 28 in Stoneham around 8:15 a.m. Saturday and were told by  several witnesses that a man driving a truck did not stop for a red light before he slammed into a car driven by the woman.

Trooper Dustin Fitch said Gareth J. Byrne, 36, of Weymouth was driving a 2005 GMC Sierra pickup truck, while Diane Daniel, 38, of Melrose, was driving a 2008 Toyota Camry.

The collision sent Daniel’s car into a fence adjacent to the road and firefighters had to extricate her from the vehicle. She was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

Fitch said Daniel was still listened in critical condition at the Boston hospital as of 1:45 p.m. Sunday.
Charges had not been filed against Byrne as of Sunday afternoon, but police continue to investigate.
