Wilmington man dies in car crash

One man died and two more people were injured in a head-on collision Sunday night in Wilmington.

At 8:33 p.m., police received a report of a motor vehicle crash on Route 125, near the Andover border.

Serious injuries were reported. Along with the Wilmington police, the Wilmington Fire Department, the North Reading Fire Department, and MassHighway were called to the scene.

Roberto Leon, 47, of Andover, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other victims, an adult and child, were injured and transported to Lawrence General Hospital.

The Massachusetts State Police were called to the scene for accident reconstruction. Police reported that Leon’s car, a 2013 Toyota Corolla, had crossed into the center lane. It almost struck one vehicle, and then collided with a second, a 2004 Chevrolet SUV.

Police had to extricate the victims from their cars, cutting off the roofs and doors, before they could be transported. Police have not released the names of the other two victims.

Route 125 and part of Route 25 were closed for several hours Sunday night while police were on the scene.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
