WESTPORT — A woman is dead and a man is under arrest after a fatal two-car accident this evening on Route 6 in Westport.
Police did not immediately release the names of the suspect, who is described as a 63-year-old man, or the victim, whom Westport police Detective Jeffrey Majewski said is a woman in her 70s.
The victim was ejected from her car after her vehicle was struck from behind by the defendant’s vehicle on Route 6 westbound, Majewski said.
Witnesses said that the defendant was driving recklessly and a high rate of speed and that the victim’s vehicle appeared to be slowing down and preparing to turn, Majewski said.
The impact propelled the victim’s silver-colored vehicle 100 feet down the westbound lanes of Route 6 before it flipped over and came to a rest off to the side of the road.
Majewski said police suspect that the operator was driving under the influence of alcohol.
“Our suspicion is that it’s drunk driving,” Majewski said.
Police arrested the man, charging him with several offenses that include motor vehicle homicide and reckless operation of a motor vehicle, Majewski said.
Westport officers and Massachusetts State Police troopers were still at the scene as of 9:30 p.m. Tow trucks arrived shortly after to remove both vehicles.
Police blocked off a little more than a half-mile stretch of the highway and redirected traffic.
