Editor’s Note: This article has been updated with the latest information from Massachusetts State Police. While the crash was initially said to have occured in Westborough, state police said the crash was on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Southborough.
A car traveling the wrong way on the Massachusetts Turnpike late Monday evening resulted in a fatal crash.
Massachusetts State Police were called to the westbound side of the Mass Pike in Southborough around 11:55 p.m. Monday evening for a report of a crash.
A vehicle traveling eastbound on the westbound side struck two vehicles head-on. The wrong-way operator, a 28-year-old man from Rutland, suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
Four occupants in the vehicles struck were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries.
The turnpike was partially closed overnight as state police investigated the crash. All lanes were reopened before 4 a.m.
The cause of the wrong-way operation remains under investigation by Troop E of the Massachusetts State Police along with the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section.
