SEEKONK – Authorities in southeastern Massachusetts say an 18th Century building that housed a tavern went up in flames after an out-of-control box truck carrying bananas crashed into a natural gas main and ignited an explosion.
Firefighters say the truck crashed next to the Old Grist Mill Tavern in Seekonk just east of Providence, R.I., at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday. Fire from the explosion spread to the tavern, whose website says the building was built in 1745 for grinding grain raised by local farmers.
The truck driver was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. His name hasn’t been released, and it’s not clear how serious his injuries are.
The building was destroyed and bulldozers were brought in to tear it down.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
