Crash happened near “octopus” traffic circle
NEW BEDFORD– An elderly woman was seriously injured Thursday morning when she was struck by a tractor trailer at a New Bedford intersection.
Police tell the New Bedford Standard-Times that the woman was in a crosswalk and using a walker, when she was struck by an 18-wheeler that was making a right-hand turn onto Pleasant Street.
Eyewitness News spoke to an eyewitness who says he saw the whole thing unfold.
“As I looked up, next thing you know she was under the back of his trailer bed and he was about to squish down her head,” recalls Anthony Moosey.
At that point, Moosey says, a good samaritan tried to save the victim from suffering further injuries.
“A man from a passing car jumped out of his car … He jumped out of the pickup truck, he ran to the woman, he picked her up off the ground, as all types of people were stopping. There was a big chaos out here.”
The woman was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital where her condition was not available as of Thursday evening.
Investigators were still on scene several hours after the crash.
The crash happened near traffic circle known locally as the “octopus.”
