Four people were hurt, one critically, after a crash on Interstate 495 Thursday afternoon involving a tractor-trailer and SUV.
According to Massachusetts State Police, a tractor-trailer heading southbound was traveling in the middle lane when, for reasons still under investigation, swerved into the left travel lane.
Police say when the tractor-trailer swerved into the left lane, the truck’s front driver side corner struck the rear passenger side corner of an SUV, causing the vehicle to roll over into the median.
State police say the front passenger, a 45-year-old Billerica woman, was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Two children in the back of the SUV, an 8-year-old and 9-year-old, were transported to UMass Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.
Police say the driver of the SUV, a 53-year-old man from Billerica, was taken to UMass Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 38-year-old man from Brook, Connecticut, was not injured in the crash.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Interstate 495 northbound and southbound were closed for a half-hour for a medical helicopter at the scene. Police say other partial lane closures were in place for a longer period of time.
