Suspect had 3-year-old with him
DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Police in Dartmouth have a man in custody, after a hit and run crash that left one person seriously injured.
It happened at near the Vanity Fair Outlet on Faunce Corner Road Thursday evening.
Officers say the vehicle hit, a Mitsubishi Galant, was found with extensive damage. The passenger, Maria Vultao, 66, of New Bedford suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital. She is in critical condition.
Four other people in the car suffered minor injuries and have been released from the hospital.
According to police, a black SUV was seen fleeing the scene. Several eyewitnesses reported seeing the vehicle turn onto I-195 West at a very high speed.
One eyewitness followed vehicle as it traveled into Fall River. The witness remained in constant contact with Massachusetts State Police, providing officers with the vehicle’s registration and other information.
The suspect, Jeffrey Brandt Kirby, 35, was finally caught on Choate Street in Fall River.
He was reportedly driving his wife’s car, and their three-year-old son riding along as a passenger. Neither Kirby nor his son suffered any injuries in the crash.
Kirby was arrested in Fall River and transferred to Dartmouth Police.
