I-495 crash kills Haverhill man, 55

A 55-year-old Haverhill man was killed when his car rolled over on Interstate 495 in Lawrence early today and was hit by a tractor-trailer. State police identified the victim as Carlos V. Cunha.

Police said Cunha was driving a 2004 Buick LeSabre shortly before 2 a.m. when it rolled over on I-495 North before Exit 42B (Route 114) in Lawrence.

The car came to rest between the middle and left lanes, where it was hit by the tractor-trailer.

Cunha was thrown from his car, but it was not clear whether that was before or after the truck hit the car.

He was determined to be dead at the scene.

The truck, a 1999 International 9000S, is owned by Left Lane Trucking LLC of Dayton,Maine. The driver, John Furman, 50, of Danville, N.H., was not injured.

The crash closed the left and middle lanes of the highway until 4:46 a.m. police said.

The accident remains under investigation by troopers from the Andover Barracks.

Assisting at the scene were the State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, State Police Crime Scene Services Section, State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, Lawrence Fire/EMS Departments, State Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
