Major accident snarls Route 9 in Shrewsbury

SHREWSBURY – A multi car accident has forced the closure of Route 9 Eastbound, as police and fire personnel work with state highway officials to investigate the cause, and remove the vehicles from the scene.

At least one vehicle was upside down, directly in front of Fiore’s.   Traffic is being re-routed through South Street, and Shrewsbury Commons for the time being, but eastbound vehicles would be well advised to take 140 south to 20 east to bypass the scene of the accident.

UPDATE:  The Shrewsbury Police Department provided the following detailed press release:

Today at 1224pm, Shrewsbury Police, Fire, EMS responded to a two vehicle crash & rollover, on Boston Turnpike, (Rt. 9) eastbound, east of Shrewsbury Commons.

A 2008 Subaru Forester operated by Antonia Cappuccio, age 61 of Jefferson, Ma. was headed eastbound  on Rt. 9, east of Commons Drive, when it was struck by a 1995 Lincoln Continental operated by Mary Iannotti, age 84,  of Worcester, Ma. The Subaru and the Lincoln then struck the center barrier.  The Subaru rolled onto its roof coming to rest in the eastbound travel lane, and the Lincoln came to rest off of the right side of the road.

Shrewsbury Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate the driver of the Lincoln from the vehicle.

Both operators were injured, and were transported to Umass Medical Center in Worcester Ma.  Additionally, two passengers in the Subaru, including a small child,  were also transported by EMS to Umass to be evaluated.

Rt. 9 eastbound in this area was closed to traffic for approximately 2 hours while police investigated.   Traffic was re-routed to side streets in the area.
