Man seriously injured in Foxboro crash

FOXBORO – While the passenger involved in a single-car crash on Elm Street over the weekend was fighting for his life in Rhode Island Hospital on Monday, the driver of the car was being arraigned in Wrentham District Court on charges of driving while drunk.

Police said Shane T. McCarthy, a 2010 graduate of Foxboro High School who is now living in Attleboro, was reported to have suffered severe head injuries after being thrown from the car and was in a medically induced coma at the Providence hospital. Police said he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The crash occurred just after 4 a.m. Sunday.

The driver, Edward F. Ryan, 20, of 56 Baker St., apt. 1, in Foxboro, also a 2010 Foxboro High grad, was arrested at the scene and taken to Norwood Hospital under police supervision. Ryan, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered minor injuries.

Police said Ryan registered a 0.192 reading on a portable blood alcohol test. The legal blood-alcohol limit for driving in Massachusetts is .08 percent. Ryan was arraigned on charges of operating under the influence and OUI with serious injury, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, speeding and marked lanes violation.

Neighbors living near the crash site at Elm Street and Ledgeville Road, said the car appeared to have rounded a blind curve before veering off the road and striking a tree. Residents in the area say the loud crash woke them up.
