A Woonsocket, R.I., man was killed Wednesday afternoon after being struck by a car on Rte. 16, police said.
Danvirgil Zamfir, 56, was stuck and killed by a car driven by Sarah Chandler, 18, of Franklin.
The accident was reported at 12:22 p.m., and police closed the road at Hartford Avenue West and the Uxbridge town line for a time.
Police and Fire Chief Ernest Horn said the man was walking on the side of the road – alongside his truck toward his boat – when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle.
Horn said Chandler was driving the vehicle.
“The girl told us she was not familiar with the area, and looked down to adjust her GPS,” he said.
According to Horn, Mendon paramedics arrived on the scene and worked on Zamfir. He said a Lifeflight helicopter was called, and the man was taken to the helicopter landing zone.
“The Lifeflight doctor made a decision at the scene to divert him directly by ground to Milford (Regional Medical Center),” he said. “Thirty minutes later, he was pronounced deceased.”
Horn said Chandler would be facing charges of vehicular homicide, driving to endanger, impeded operation and failure to stay in marked lanes. Chandler, he said, was not arrested, and will be summoned to court at a future date.
Horn said Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council personnel were on the scene, investigating the crash.
