Middleboro woman dies in Plainville crash

PLAINVILLE – An 18-year-old Middleboro woman whose car crashed into a tree off Interstate 495 Saturday night, has died from her injuries.

Laura Vannett, who was reportedly not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where she was pronounced dead, according to state police Lt. David Wilson.

Veronica Valenti, 21, of Middleboro, was a passenger in the car and was taken by ambulance to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro for treatment of minor injuries, Wilson said.

Valenti was wearing a seat belt, Wilson said.

Vannett was driving a 1996 Toyota Avalon southbound on the highway when she lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road, and crashed into a tree just south of I-495’s intersection with Route 1. Wilson said the cause of the accident remains under investigation by state police.

The accident, which occurred shortly before 9 p.m., shut down the highway for more than two hours as police conducted their investigation.

According to her profile, Vannett attended New Bedford and Middleboro high schools and was a member of the Class of 2010.

She recently began working as a hostess at the International House of Pancakes, the profile said, and she previously worked as a waitress at Friendly’s.

A listing for Vannett’s family was not available Sunday night.
